How Andre Agassi Went From Rags To Riches!

“No matter where you are in life, there is always a journey ahead.”  Nelson Mandela.

As the 20th anniversary of the Agassi’s 1999 French Open Championship approaches, I wanted to talk about how Andre Agassi went from rags to riches.  When I mean rags to riches, I do not mean financially.  I mean how Andre became rich spiritually and emotionally.  Andre became a better man and matured in front of the eyes of many tennis fans.

Andre Agassi is a loving husband, father, philanthropist, giving, and loving person.  He is also a legendary tennis player and perhaps my favorite tennis player.  Even though I am impressed with his game, Andre is my favorite tennis player because of the person he became.

Andre took us all on his emotional journey both on and off the court.  He started as a lost soul, an underachiever, and someone who could not deliver in the big moments.   Despite his comeback in 1998, many so called experts believed Andre flushed his career down the toilet as the 1999 French Open began.  Yet, Andre proved many critics wrong and defied the odds.

Previously, Andre had to great opportunities to win the French back in the early 90’s.  Both times, he was the favorite and both times he lost.  The way he lost too was devastating and made many people question his heart and grit.  In 1990, he was the overwhelming favorite.  Yet, he barely showed up and lost to veteran Andres Gomez.  In 1991, he was up two sets to one on fellow American Jim Courier and lost the match in 5 sets.  This time he had the match on his racquet and completely surrendered it.

To have another opportunity to make the finals, Andre had to get through the defending champion in Carlos Moya in the 4th round.  Moya took the first two sets and appeared on his way to an easy victory.  However, Andre changed things up and started to serve and volley.  This confused Moya, and Agassi came back in dramatic fashion to win in 5 sets.

Andre had a couple of other tough manages, but gained a birth in the finals 8 years after his previous one.  His opponent would be Andrei Medvedev.  Unfortunately, it appeared the script was going down the same path as the previous two French Open Finals.  Andre was tentative and a deer in headlights.  Andre played two very lackluster sets and got behind two sets to love.  However, Andre started to relax and just took things one game at a time.  He changed his approach and started to volley and kept Medvedev off balance.  All of a sudden, Agassi won the 3rd set and was back in the match.

The last two sets, all his demons, all his heartaches, and all his frustrations came to the surface.  Andre overcame all of them.  Andre found himself serving for the match, and he became the French Open Champion.  Tears of joy overcame Andre as he had conquered what seemed to be lost many years ago.  It was his first major in four years, and it also gave him the career slam winning all four majors.

Andre became a tennis legend.  More than that, he rode that momentum on and off the court.  He stayed fit and never let himself go again.  He found his soulmate and married tennis legend Steffi Graf, and he opened up the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy.

After being down and out two years earlier, Andre was on top of the tennis world and became the zen master on and off the court.

How did Andre turn his career and life around?  Here is how he did it.

  1. Andre found his “Why” and “Purpose” in life.  Andre found himself playing tennis for something that was much bigger than him.  His purpose is to change and drastically improve the education system.  Tennis became a team sport for him because he was playing for his school which is something that is much bigger than him.  He was playing for children to get a top quality education where otherwise they would not have the opportunity to do so.
  2.   He found a role model or better yet words of wisdom.  During the toughest of times, Andre got the privilege to meet Nelson Mandela.  The words and wisdom shared by Mandela shaped and altered Andre’s life forever.  The message Andre got was to be a better person and to step up.  From Andre’s autobiography, “Open”, Andre shares the following from his visit with Mandela:   We must all care for one another.  But we must care for ourselves which means be careful in our decisions, careful in our relationships, and careful in our statements.  We need to live life carefully in order to avoid being victims.  I feel as he’s speaking directly to me, as if he’s aware that I’ve been careless with my talent and health.
  3.    Andre found love.  Andre fell in love with female tennis legend Steffi Graf in 1999.  Steffi and Andre are perfectly aligned with their values and have created an incredible institution.  Andre is now a father of two very beautiful children.
  4.    The ability to give.  Andre was one of the first big athletes and celebrities along with Oprah to open up a school.  Andre asked himself how he could give more.  He realized that opening a boys and girls club which he did was only putting a band-aid on the problem to the poor education kids were getting in Las Vegas.  Andre knew he had to get to the source of the problem and had to create an education program that would create higher standards and great opportunities.

How To Regain Lost Confidence!

IMG_6259

This question arrived in my email this morning and the question is, “how do I regain my self-confidence when it has been shaken?”

First of all, we all get our confidence shaken or tested at one time or another.  It is part of life and can happen at any moment whether it is you are not performing in your job as you thought you were.  It could be that you are madly in love and your partner wants to end the relationship.  It could also be a life event such as moving to another part of the country and having your certainty all of a sudden vanish.

Regardless of any event and outcome, life is always moving forward even when we are not ready to move with it.  That is okay at least for the moment.  However, we can be left standing still forever and need to eventually move forward as well.

Here are four quick steps in order to help you regain confidence after it has been shaken:

  1. Step away from the set back and do something enjoyable.  Your focus and energy will likely be stuck on the event and feeling on losing your confidence.  The best thing to do is to move away from the focus and do something fun and will recharge your batteries.  That could be playing golf, spending a day at the spa, or see certain family and friends.  These activities will remind us what we truly live for.
  2. Reflect by being honest with yourself and create an empowering meaning.  Tony Robbins states, “it’s not the event that matters, it is the meaning we give to the event’.  We party when we succeed and we ponder when we fail.  The truth is that life happens for us not to us.  Identify your role and responsibility on this setback occurring.  By getting real with yourself, you will find that the event or setback is actually a great thing because it prepares us for the next level we need to get into our lives.  A lost job means that we are getting ready for the job we always dreamed about happening or the perfect relationship.
  3. Take small actions to create momentum.  Once we have created an empowering meaning, we can get back to taken action.  We want to create small wins and build upon that.  According to Entrepreneur Magazine when we win at something — no matter how big or small — your body releases higher levels of dopamine that create the “addiction” for more success.  As the small wins accumulate, the larger the snowball grows and we progress slowly to larger goals.
  4. Whenever you get down, change your state.  It is natural for us to lose our confidence at any time.  The quickest way to get that confidence back is to change our state by moving our body, elevating our shoulders, and feel your feet are planted in the ground.  It is said that emotion is created by motion.  Confidence or a lack of confidence is nothing more than an emotion.

How I Deal With Being Lazy!

I admit it.  I can be very lazy.  I was the laziest person I know.  My brain was lazy.  My courage was weak, and physically I was not moving.  I believe that all of us at one time are lazy or have been lazy.

I have heard crazy things like lazy is a mental health issue or it is hereditary.  Yet, laziness is just a habit.   In order to not be lazy, we need to change the habit.  In order to change the habit, we need to condition ourselves to do so.  The best way to do this is change our state.  We need to move differently.  Thus, we need to change our physiology.  Changing your body can get you from a lethargic state to a high energy state in a heartbeat.

In addition to changing your state, here are other habits and methods I use to overcome laziness:

  1. Link massive pain to not taking action as opposed to taking action.  An example of this is when we decide not to eat healthy.  Think of the consequences of not eating healthy.  How will your body feel?
  2. Have consequences of not following through as well as a reward system.  For me, there is a tax for not achieving my weekly goals.  I pay $10 to my mastermind group when I don’t take action and achieve my outcome for the week.  If you are not in a mastermind group, you can make a bet with a friend that you will go to the gym for a certain number of days.  If not, you need to pay your friend $20.  Also a reward system can be motivating because what gets rewarded, gets repeated.  If I go to work out four times in a week, I will take Saturday and make it a fun day.  Otherwise, I will need to go to the gym on Saturday.
  3. Do you have compelling reasons?  Do you have a why or a purpose?  If so, you need to keep reminding yourself why you want to achieve a certain goal.  You need to check in constantly on why you are doing it.  Make sure that the why and purpose is meaningful and emotional that you will be moved deeply by it.  Do not make your why shallow because you will not be motivated long term by it.
  4. Lastly who is important in your life?  Who do you love?  We will never follow through on a goal or outcome if we are doing it for ourselves alone.  Why would one want to be healthy and fit?  It could be they want to be around for their children and grandchildren and see both generations have a family of their own.  Maybe you need to take that additional appointment on the weekend or need to make that additional call.  It could mean taking that dream vacation with your significant other or sending your children to the best private school.

Thus if we are being lazy, we are squarely focusing on ourselves.  Always remember if we are feeling unmotivated, change your state.  Also remind yourself of your why, have consequences and a reward system, and focus on who you love and care for.

Avoiding Negativity In Today’s Instant Media World

IMG_6114

In this blog, I wanted to talk about negativity.  There is negativity surrounding us everywhere, especially in the news and media.  It has only gotten worse in the instant media that we have today.  Better yet, it is the over consumption of watching news.

There is nothing more toxic and dangerous to the mind and soul by constantly feeding yourself with the news, especially negative news that is filled with tragedies, crime, politics, the economy, and climate change.  A study of researchers Shawn Achor and Michelle Gielan along with Thrive founder Arianna Huffington found that three minutes of negative news (vs. more uplifting content) can ruin your mood for the rest of the day.

The news is a business.  It is not to inform you.  It is to shock you.  Now I understand that conversations and discussions in our culture does require to stay informed, and I understand that.  However, if you have a growth mindset and listening to this, then you know that a prolonged discussion about politics or negative news is not the most compelling way to spend time.  I also know that we need to stay informed in order to network and have productive interactions in order to gain rapport.

Here are some ways that I have practiced to stay informed, but not overindulge listening, reading, and watching the news:

  1. Pick a time of day to catch up with the headlines.  Use a local news source, so you can at least know what is going on in your immediate world: weather, local news, sports, and local outlets do cover national and world news.
  2. If you feel the local news is not enough, choose a national headline that you are comfortable with.  Stay away from opinions and columnist because they can be extremely harsh and cruel to others who do not share their same beliefs.
  3. Avoid reviewing news in the morning.  The morning is time for yourself to prepare for a fulfilling and productive day.  Super life coach Dean Graziosi states that if he looks at his phone in the morning, he knows that it is a 50 percent chance that he will have a bad day.  Spend the morning in gratitude and do positive rituals.
  4. Spend no more than 30 minutes of watching and reviewing the news per day.  You can allow 45 minutes if you follow both local and national news.
  5. Most important, watch, read, or listen to something uplifting, inspirational, and gratifying content after you spend your time with the news.  This will elevate your state and make you productive and happier on you are doing next.

How To Overcome Being A Scatterbrain!

IMG_4661

I lived most of my life as a scatterbrain.  My mind would race a million different directions and can get easily overwhelmed.  Scatterbrain people are also easily distracted, even in one on one conversations. My mind would be elsewhere.  There are just too many things going on the brain.

The good news is that for 2019 is that I have decided to manage my scatterbrain and have seen some significant improvements and concentration.  I am also much more productive and have more structure in my life.

So here seven ways to overcome being a scatterbrain:

  1. Set a schedule and block out the time.  One of the biggest changes and shift in focus is to use my Outlook Calendar on my phone and desktop.  It is important to plan your day accordingly.  Thus, you can focus on what is important.  Stick to the task that you have scheduled for.  For instance if you need to make sales calls, set time between 9am to 9:30am that will be uninterrupted phone calls.  Then at 10am, take a 15 minute break or so.  I actually block out time at night knowing that I will watch the basketball game or spend time with my wife.
  2. Prioritize.  I cannot emphasize this enough.  It is why we make a schedule.  It will enable us to focus on that one item and the most important.  For example if you are in sales and need prospects, obviously prospecting is the biggest priority and not administration work.  Set time later to focus on administration.
  3. Start Slowly.  Notice that I mentioned, set sales calls between 9am to 9:30am?  Keep the intervals short.  Your brain can only focus so much if you are a scatterbrain.  It needs to start slowly.  If you are beginning to run, you will not just go out and run 10 miles.  You will need to work up to it.  You can schedule another 30 minutes during the late morning and another one in the afternoon.  You can increase from 30 minutes to 45 minutes or an hour, once you are comfortable with solely focusing on for 30 minutes.
  4. Reward yourself.  What gets rewarded gets repeated.  Letting go of the scatterbrain is not easy.  Our subconscious and brain is very comfortable with the scatterbrain.  Give yourself time that you can just drift off mentally.  Also reward yourself by buying something you love.  Keep this process and you will build momentum in no time.
  5. Keep a Journal and Use it.  Make sure you block time to journal as well.  Place your thoughts and emotions in a journal.  It will amazing to see how your thoughts and vulnerabilities will flow by writing.  It will ease your mind and help you focus much more precisely.  Consistent journaling with reduce and even eliminate the scatterbrain.
  6. Know your Purpose.  It is so important and vital to know your life’s purpose and connect everything you do to your purpose.  By having a purpose we have a direction, and we are moving toward what we truly want and desire in life.  Having a purpose will enable us to focus on what we need to in order to achieve our desired outcomes in life.  Having a purpose gives us fulfillment and knowing where we want to go.
  7. Create a ritual of meditation, yoga, or other relaxing methods.  I am not the best person for this topic as I need to improve upon meditating myself.  However, meditation enhances self-awareness and lengthens attention span incredibly.

Creating An Extraordinary Life!

IMG_4768

An excerpt from my book “The Big Four” on what we can learn from Roger.

In Tony Robbins’ best selling book, “Unshakeable,” he explains the science of achievement is that in every field there are “rules to success” that we can break or follow. If we break the rules, we will fail or even perhaps suffer. For every rule we follow, we can have success and achievement. Federer follows the rules on what it takes to be a top tennis player. He has achieved everything imaginable in tennis by training his mind and body to prepare for every season and match in order to stay consistently at the top of the game. Federer found out in his late teens that talent alone was not going to elevate him to the top of the game. He followed the rules to be a successful player and has been able to win 20 major titles.

Each of us can look at what we want to achieve and then figure out what the rules are to get the result we want. For example, if optimal health is what you want, you may research to learn you need proper rest, physical activity, and a sensible diet to have a healthy mind and body- one that is consistently energized. And you might learn that if you do not follow the rules and eat poorly, you will feel like less-than-optimal and perhaps even get sick.

The same principles apply for wealth or any other thing you desire. If you model wealthy individuals and their investment and money management strategies, you will likely have that success.

The second skill that we all seen Roger master in his life is the art of fulfillment. Unlike the science of achievement where there are rules to follow, the art of fulfillment is different for everyone.

For example, as an avid tennis fan I cannot get enough of watching the matches and could talk for hours about the game. Yet, there are others who do not share that same passion. To others it might be boring, and they look at the game as simply two players hitting a ball back and forth. In this same way, the art of fulfillment is deeply personal.

For someone like Roger Federer, this fulfillment may be achieved by growing and giving. He has demonstrated a desire to better himself on and off the court. As seen in many interviews and public appearances, Federer is very comfortable and at peace with who he is as a person. He is also very giving and charitable. The Roger Federer Foundation that he founded has served nearly one million children and has been focused on improving the quality of education specifically in South Africa. He has not only donated funds but also his time by visiting the children.

The Greatness Of Serena Williams

IMG_4664

In my last blog, I covered the career and mindset of tennis legend Andy Murray.

Since the Australian Open is still happening, I thought it would also be great to understand what we can learn from perhaps the greatest tennis player of all time, Serena Williams.

Serena Williams’ records are absolutely incredible and is one for the ages.  She has won a total of 23 Grand Slams and going for a 24th Grand Slam at the Australian Open.  The record is currently held by Australia’s own Margaret Court.

Serena has been completely unrivaled throughout her career by just completely dominating the tour.  Perhaps, her older sister Venus comes the closest to a rival.

When we break down Serena’s game, it appears that she is just a naturally gifted athlete and tennis player who is stronger than the rest of the women on the tour.  Yet, nothing can be further from the truth.  Yes, she has all the tools with hardly any weaknesses.  Yet, Serena trains vigorously and harder than anyone else on tour.

Thus, the first attribute we can take away from Serena is to:

  1. Train harder than anyone else.  A direct quote from Serena states, “there’s obviously days that I don’t feel like training.  But, there is no day that goes by that I feel like losing”.  Serena was asked about being lucky and stated, “luck has nothing to do with it because I spent many hours, on the court working for my one moment in time”.
  2. There’s always something you have to give up for success.  Everything comes at a cost.  Are you willing to pay for it?  To me, success is very simple.  It is following a recipe.  Yet, I know that I need to spend my time developing myself and adding value to others.  That means know that I cannot watch Netflix for 10 hours/day.
  3. Always love yourself and do not be concerned with others.  Serena is very conscious ensuring she is continuing to work on self love.  She also does not follow what is being talked or written about her.  It is very crucial for us to love and accept ourselves fully to master achievement and live a fulfilling life.
  4. We are allowed to make mistakes once in a while.  Even though Serena is perhaps the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time), even she is human.  Sometimes her competitive fire gets the best of her.  Serena believes to accept and learn from them, so we can become better on and off the court.
  5. Lastly when the mast is on the line, remain calm under pressure.  Why does Serena, Michael Jordan, and Tom Brady deliver in the clutch better than anyone else?  It is that they remain cool, calm, and relaxed.  All of them feel that all the work and preparation have gotten them ready for this moment.  They know it is their time to shine.

Perseverance: The Outstanding Career Of Andy Murray.

IMG_3489

The tennis world was saddened by the announcement that this would be Andy’s last year on the tour. In this blog, I talk about the great career that Andy had on the tour and what he accomplished and how he persevered. Andy is a role model for excellence in which we can all learn from and apply Andy’s principles in our lives.

I am always reminded of a quote from Anthony Robbins where he says, “When it seems impossible, when it seems like nothing is going to work, you’re only a few millimeters away from making it happen.” I truly believe that Andy Murray has applied this quote throughout his professional tennis career.

So, what can we learn from Andy Murray? How can we apply perseverance in our everyday lives?

LESSON 1: Remember that everyone faces their own challenges

For a start, having the right mindset goes a long way. Anything worthwhile is not easy, otherwise everyone would already be doing it. It is through these challenges that we are given opportunities to grow and learn. Often success of athletes like Andy Murray seems to look easy, but the reality is we don’t always see the behind the scenes work that it takes to get to the level of an elite athlete and the sacrifices that need to be made.

In the case of us regular people that are not elite athletes, sometimes these setbacks may present themselves as being passed over for that job promotion or getting unexpected news from the doctor. It can be experiencing bumps in the road in our relationships or not getting accepted into that program that we applied to. These challenges can and will happen at every stage of our lives and a big part of what makes people successful is their ability to face these challenges and setbacks head on.

LESSON 2: Keep going and outwork the self-doubts

You’ll notice that every time Andy Murray faced a professional setback his response was to get back up again and keep going. After his first trip to the Wimbledon final and that heartbreaking loss, he didn’t let it discourage him. He got back to the practice courts, looked at what he could improve upon, and continued pushing forward to get better. Even in the earlier phases of his career when he began to have doubts about whether he’d fulfill his potential of winning major titles, he quieted those worries by putting in the necessary work to get closer to his goal.

This is an excellent lesson in the power of momentum. When you are faced with any type of problem and get discouraged, if you simply think about what steps you can take to improve your situation you will make great strides in changing your circumstances. For example, if you lose your job and are out of the workforce for a period while searching for a new position, you may get discouraged and start to believe the worst- that you’ll never be hired anywhere. Instead of hyper-focusing on that extreme scenario (which is not productive) instead, focus your efforts on the small actions that you can take to find a job- networking, updating your resume, up skilling and taking additional courses. You will eventually dig your way out of that hole and find your footing.

LESSON 3: Find a mentor

When Andy Murray hired Ivan Lendl to coach him, it changed the trajectory of Murray’s tennis career. Ivan Lendl understood what it was like to fall short in grand slam finals before breaking through to win one. He was the perfect role model for Murray because he had been where Murray was before and held his own roadmap of how to win championships. As a result of hiring Lendl and gaining those unique insights, Murray was able to win an Olympic gold medal as well as his first two major titles within the span of a year.

Just like Andy Murray, we can hire or find role models for ourselves. If you have a goal, one of the best ways you can achieve that goal is to find a role model who has already done what you want to do. An acquaintance of mine can personally attest to this strategy with his own story. He was interested in breaking into real estate in his home country of Canada and while working in construction he had the courage to approach a well-established real estate mogul to teach him the ropes. Because of this mentorship, this acquaintance has built up his own real estate business and is a multi-millionaire with a beautiful lake house in British Columbia and other properties in the Vancouver area.

But even if you can’t connect with someone directly in your field, you can find mentors in other places as well. Biographies, books, internet content all contains stories of people doing the exact things and accomplishing many of the same goals that you have. Be inspired by their stories and gain the confidence that you can do it to. This applies to all areas; relationships, health, and even spirituality.

LESSON 4: The past doesn’t equal the future

Andy Murray more than anyone understands that the past doesn’t equal the future. He was a tennis prodigy, but this didn’t automatically mean success on the men’s tour. As he got further along in his career he repeatedly lost in grand slam finals- but this past failure did not keep him from achieving future grand slam wins. Murray did not allow past failures to dictate his optimism of the future.

Murray met Federer in the final of the 2012 Olympics to decide the Gold Medal. This rematch against the opponent he lost to in his first Wimbledon finals appearance was billed to be a revenge mission- but Murray didn’t see it that way. He played his own game and the results came. Murray didn’t dwell on past results. He went in with a clean slate, new tactics, and new strategies.

The important lesson to remember here is that learning from the past is different than dwelling on it. It is extremely important to learn and grow from our failures, and just as important to know we can write a new future. In the same way that we cannot sit on our laurels and expect the past will deliver future wins. We must be diligent about ensuring we progress.

My 2019 Goals

Happy New Year background

2018 was a great year for me personally.  As with any other year, I had my highs and my lows.  There were some great experiences and goals that I did reach.  However, there were opportunities that I can improve in 2019.

2018 was the first year that I actually written down my goals and declared them publicly.  I am happy that I reached a few of them.  However, there was some valuable lessons.  One of the lessons that I learned is to build a foundation and bring it up slowly at first.  Last year, I set too many goals.  As a result, I got overwhelmed and frustrated.  I realized that when it comes to goal setting, we cannot go from 0 to 120 miles per hour in 2 seconds.

This year I am setting more short term goals and fewer of them.  Thus, I can focus on a couple of them while I gain momentum.  I can then take on more goals and missions once I build momentum.  For the first part of January, I will focus on my health and time management.  I am not even going to focus on my business, emotions, and other areas.  I feel that my health is a priority and being able to manage my time will enable me to be able to prioritize on the other areas of my life.

I will re-evaluate my goals at the end of January and make any readjustments.  Once the first quarter ends, I will make some goal changes for the remainder of the year because my yearly goals are not fixed.   They are flexible.  For example, I set a goal of making only 40 YouTube videos.  Yet, I know that I will likely make more than 40.  I want to make this goal achievable then stretch it out once I know I have the habit to be able to create more videos.  In other words, I am building a habit muscle to be more productive.

Here are my goals for 2019:

Health and Fitness Goals
To be 180 pounds by 2/15/19.  Currently at 195 pounds.
To work out a total 4 times/week in January including tennis.  Thus, I will go to the gym 2-3 times/week.  Deadline January 31st.
Time Goals
To plan my day the latest the night before.
Use the Apple Calendar on a daily basis, so I can structure business time, block out workout, blockout listening to education videos, read books, relationship time, etc.
Relationship Goals
To easily create magic moments with Carmen at least once/week.   We will block an hour once/week check in with each other to make sure we are meeting our needs.  We also commit to having quality time just the two of us with no distractions.  We will either spend time alone or have a date night.
I will visit a family member at two times/month
Spiritual/Contribution Goals
I will easily spend two times/week meditating and spending time alone thanking my creator.  Start mid February 2019.
I will easily write love letters anonymously and hand out to strangers.   It will be my second year I accomplish this.  Target April 2019
I will easily read 10 pages biweekly of “A Course In Miracles”.  Start March 2019.
I will easily donate $1,000 to different charities and organizations.  March 2019 to begin
Education Goals:
I will easily attend one seminar this year which will be the Traffic and Conversion Summit late February in San Diego.
I will invest in Blinkist to read one book summary biweekly start in May 2019.
I will complete a Udemny public speaking class by June 2018 (start in Mid May).
I will easily complete Dan Lok’s HTC course by April 2019.
Business Goals:
I will easily have my book available by the end of January 2019.  I will have a free promotion via Kindle in February 2019.
I will produce one video/week and 40 for the year.  Starting in Mid January.
I will easily have 30 blog posts on Mission Fulfillment for 2019.
I will easily create a squeeze page for Mission Fulfillment by December 2019.
I will easily pursue advertising to reach more people in the spring of 2019.
Fun Goals
I will easily socialize with friends at two times/month.
I will easily go on one vacation with Carmen in 2019.  Prospects are Singapore and Peru.
I will easily attend one tennis tournament in 2019 (most likely Miami Open late March).

The Character Trait That We Must Have To Ensure Our Success.

IMG_1608.JPG

I wanted to talk about something that we must all develop in order to have sustainable success in all areas of our lives.

That trait is perseverance.  Perseverance is defined in dictionary.com as an activity that is maintained in spite of the difficulties or delay in achieving success.    In other words, we need to keep working.  We need to trust the process, and we need to make adjustments until we achieve our desired outcome.

Right now, I am studying the mindset of tennis champion Andy Murray.  One thing that has made Andy a Wimbledon Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist, and #1 player in the world for 2016 is perseverance.

For Andy, it did not happen overnight.  Andy had to go through many heartbreaking losses in big tournament finals and watch his peers Nadal and Djokovic achieve his desired results faster.  However, Andy trusted the process and kept going to work.  As a result, he is a hero among Great Britain and many kids all over the world.  He is a great role model to youngsters because he kept going despite all the bumps along the road.

So how do we persevere like Andy Murray and other great successes that are around us?

Here are some attributes that persevering people do:

  1. Know your goals. Consistently review your goals and make sure they are worth pursuing.
  2. Reward and celebrate along the way.  What gets rewarded, gets repeated.  We need to celebrate each step.  That will keep us going even when we do not have the desired outcome yet.
  3. Stop worrying.  Make sure we stay in the moment.  Mark Twain once said, “I’ve suffered a great many catastrophes in my life.  Most of them never happened”.
  4. Avoid distractions and stay on your path.  Ease up on the technology.  Stop indulging in social media and other useless activities.  Block out some specific time that you will check social media, texts, and other tasks that get you away for a moment.
  5. Anticipate down the road.  By preparing yourself for the next step, you avoid complacency.
  6. Keep asking the right questions.  Better questions get you better answers to achieve your goal.  It also shifts your focus as well.
  7. Just keep going.  Having faith in the process will always pay off.  As my mentor and coach Stefan James says, “Trust the Process”.
  8. Always remember past wins and accomplishments.  When you feel it is not attainable, remember those times and moments you were able to achieve your outcome.  Also, remember you are here now at this place and this time.  You are a human being on earth.  You have already won.
