What We Can Learn From Kobe Bryant and Apply It!

Here are four principles that we can learn from Kobe Bryant on the basketball court and off the basketball court that we can apply in our lives and be the best versions of ourselves and create an extraordinary life.

  1. Outwork everyone:  Kobe knew that for him to be the best version of himself and the best basketball player, he need to outwork everyone.  He knew his teammates and his competition’s training regimen.  Kobe knew that getting up at 4am everyday to train is what he needed to do to achieve his goals to win championships.  If he found out that someone else was getting up at 4am, he would wake up at 2am to get to work.
  2. Failure and losing is a gift:  Most fear failure and losing.  Kobe believes that losing creates opportunities.  It creates opportunities for growth and getting to the next level.  Kobe believed though we needed to become true with ourselves and face the failures.  That means watching film of games that he lost against a specific team to see where him and his team went wrong, the mistakes, and what he can improve upon for next time.
  3. Be a long term thinker: Kobe was very smart at a very young age that greatness is going to take time and patience.  He knew that he had to focus on one thing at a time to master before going to the next phase.  At 10 years old, he was not nearly as good as anyone in his age group.  He got zero points in a game.  Thus, he decided that he was going to work on his game.  At first, he worked on his outside shot.  He was able to hit open jump shots, but needed to learn to hit one being heavily guarded and he did that as well.  And then he worked on his defense, rebounding, passing, until he mastered all the fundamentals.  By the time, he was in High School, he was an All American who went right into the NBA.
  4. Find your passion and do what you love:  Kobe enjoyed the work and process.  Kobe stated if he had to remind himself why he needed to wake up early and work hard, then he needed to find a new profession.

Two Musts In Pursuing Your Dreams!

DefaultKnockOutIMG (1)

Today, I had the opportunity to appear on local access television to talk about my book.  My friend Krystyne Cheever interviewed me on “The Big Four”.

It was a privilege to talk about a book, where I am able to talk about how we can all learn from Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray.  One questions that Krystyne usually ask her quests is, “how would you inspire someone to follow path in creativity and passion for the arts?”.  I thought about my answer prior to the interview, and I truly believe there are two things that we need to follow our passion: love and belief.

  1. We need absolutely love what we do.  The love is going to keep us going, whether it is being an actor, writer, director, athlete, or any other field we are passionate about.  Too many times, I see people pursuing a certain field like acting for the glorification.  Pursuing for glorification is a huge mistake.  Even if you become a star, there will not be fulfillment unless we are loving the journey along the way.  Novak Djokovic struggled with his tennis back in 2010 and thought about quitting.  Now this is a 16 time grand slam champion.  Fortunately, he did not quit.  What kept him going was refocusing on the love of the game and letting the wins take care of themselves.  Winning trophies became secondary for Novak, while the love for tennis comes first.
  2. We also need to have that belief as well.  We will fail, get knocked down, but the belief in ourselves as well as the love of what we do will get us back up.  We must always act as if our prayers have been answered.  We need to act as if we already have made it big in our passion.  Roger Federer states we need to believe before we achieve.  Roger already had the belief of greatness before he started winning grand slams.  Roger also stated that most players feel that if they win a few matches, they will gather the belief.  Roger decided to believe he was already a champion before he became one.

Creating An Extraordinary Life!

An excerpt from my book “The Big Four” on what we can learn from Roger.

In Tony Robbins’ best selling book, “Unshakeable,” he explains the science of achievement is that in every field there are “rules to success” that we can break or follow. If we break the rules, we will fail or even perhaps suffer. For every rule we follow, we can have success and achievement. Federer follows the rules on what it takes to be a top tennis player. He has achieved everything imaginable in tennis by training his mind and body to prepare for every season and match in order to stay consistently at the top of the game. Federer found out in his late teens that talent alone was not going to elevate him to the top of the game. He followed the rules to be a successful player and has been able to win 20 major titles.

Each of us can look at what we want to achieve and then figure out what the rules are to get the result we want. For example, if optimal health is what you want, you may research to learn you need proper rest, physical activity, and a sensible diet to have a healthy mind and body- one that is consistently energized. And you might learn that if you do not follow the rules and eat poorly, you will feel like less-than-optimal and perhaps even get sick.

The same principles apply for wealth or any other thing you desire. If you model wealthy individuals and their investment and money management strategies, you will likely have that success.

The second skill that we all seen Roger master in his life is the art of fulfillment. Unlike the science of achievement where there are rules to follow, the art of fulfillment is different for everyone.

For example, as an avid tennis fan I cannot get enough of watching the matches and could talk for hours about the game. Yet, there are others who do not share that same passion. To others it might be boring, and they look at the game as simply two players hitting a ball back and forth. In this same way, the art of fulfillment is deeply personal.

For someone like Roger Federer, this fulfillment may be achieved by growing and giving. He has demonstrated a desire to better himself on and off the court. As seen in many interviews and public appearances, Federer is very comfortable and at peace with who he is as a person. He is also very giving and charitable. The Roger Federer Foundation that he founded has served nearly one million children and has been focused on improving the quality of education specifically in South Africa. He has not only donated funds but also his time by visiting the children.

Four Reasons Why I Am Making Health A Bigger Priority In My Life.

For the last month, I have reevaluated my health.  I have watched two documenaries on Netflix that have had a profound impact on me.  The documentaries are “What The Health” and “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead”.  Both documentaries have given me a wake up call on my health, where it currently is, and where I need to be.

The four reasons for why I have decided to improve my health are:

  1. It gives more energy and vitality, especially throughout the day.
  2. It improves mood swings drastically.  With the body free up of the stress of constantly digesting processed and concentrated foods, it will feel lighter.
  3. It gives more time of the day and requires fewer hours of sleep.
  4. It will add 20 more years of your life and reduce the costs drastically of doctor bills and medication.

For energy, I will be able to work on my business and will able to serve my clients on a higer and much more efficent level.  I will also be able to get through the day with vitality, joy, and ease with less stress.  More energy also makes us more productive.

Mood swings of course will enhance the relationships with our significant other, family, friends, colleagues, clients, and even people we just came across.  By having less of a mood swing, one will have much more influence as well.

For me having more time of the day is knowing I can get my day off on the right foot.  I can have my mornings to spend time doing my morning ritual where I can thank my creator for giving me the gift of life.  I can spend that time getting my workout and meditation.  For others, it could be staying up an extra hour either spending time with their loved ones, friends, or watching a tv program such as the late night talk show.

Lastly, I am not a doctor nor a nutrionist.  Yet, there are plenty of resources around us to know that eating healthy will not only add years on our lives on a quantity perspective, but also on a quantity perspective.

I hope you will join me on this journey to living a healthy lifestyle of great balance of nutrition, wellness, and exercise.

I would love to hear from you on what your health rituals are.
